The Conflict Management Toolkit is meant as a guide for those interested in how to approach, analyze and resolve conflict. However, simultaneously as we learn how to manage conflicts, several are occurring around the world. These and other past conflicts, and efforts to manage them, are real-world examples of the application of the theories presented in the Toolkit. This section is meant to complement the Approaches section by presenting a particular conflict, then showing management efforts undertaken in each. Case Studies are organized geographically into the following regions: Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. Each study gives a short historical background of a case, then delinates its main actors and their positions. The focus of each study however, is conceptual rather than chronological. Each case study is identified and studied through the various approaches taken: conflict prevention measures, peacemaking efforts, peacekeeping missions, peacebuilding projects, and/or long-term statebuilding. All cases are different - the nuances of each case can help us understand what went right or wrong in a management attempt. Some cases show examples of all the conflict management approaches, while others do not. Some show proper application of the theories outlined in the Toolkit, while others show improper application. Our method of analysis therefore provides common ground for comparison, while preserving the uniqueness of each case. The Conflict Management Toolkit is seeking additional Case Studies to augment its base of knowledge. If you are interested in contributing and having your case study published on the site, see the page on how to Write a Case Study. |
