Why should you choose the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies?

Your decision to study at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center is a decision about your future. We realize that such an important decision requires you to review all of the available options as you search for the best possible match to your academic needs and goals. The Hopkins-Nanjing Center provides several outstanding opportunities for serious students interested in making China an element or a focus of their career. Below are just a few of the reasons you should consider the Hopkins-Nanjing Center as your next step towards building a future in Sino-American relations.

  1. Two distinct programs provide you flexibility to achieve your academic goals. Whether you spend one year of study in the Center's Certificate program or two years to earn the Master of Arts in International Studies degree, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center will take you to a new level in your understanding of Sino-American relations.

  2. Two prestigious universities, one exceptional degree. The Master of Arts in International Studies degree at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center is jointly offered by the The Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and Nanjing University, making it one of the most unique degrees offered in China or the United States.

  3. A year of study, the experience of a lifetime. The one-year, graduate-level, residential program brings Chinese and International students together in a learning environment that extends beyond the interdisciplinary coursework offered in formal classes. Over the course of the year, many alumni build professional and personal relationships that last a lifetime.

  4. A proven track record of launching careers in China, China Studies, and Sino-American relations. The Hopkins-Nanjing Center has been educating future leaders in Sino-American relations since 1986. Center alumni have gone on to outstanding careers in government, non-profit organizations, academia, and the private sector. For a more comprehensive look at our graduate's success, please review our Alumni Employment Report.

  5. Curriculum similar to that of the prestigious Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University -- international relations, foreign policy, government, comparative politics, society, language, economics and trade. Seminars, conferences and lecture series are held at the Center on timely issues of business, law, political science, history and culture pertaining to Chinese-American relations.

  6. NOT an exchange program, but a residential experience where up to 100 Chinese and non-Chinese participants live, study, eat and socialize together in a facility built for this purpose in Nanjing. They learn about each others' institutions, systems, and values from fellow students and from professors of the other culture using the teaching methods of that culture.

  7. Unique in being the only truly joint program of its kind in China: It is jointly administered and jointly funded by The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University. The Center's open stack library, lack of censorship, pioneering teaching methods, use of Chinese language by American and international students in their courses (as the Chinese use English) and the intensive bi-national living and learning experience it provides are producing a network of individuals trained together to be the future managers of Chinese-American interaction.

  8. A national resource for both countries, not just two universities. Participants and faculty are selected competitively throughout United States and China, and now internationally as well.
