Facilities

The Center is located on the campus of Nanjing University, one of China's foremost academic institutions. Built specifically to house this institution, the modern facility includes residential apartments and dormitory rooms for students and professors, a library, a student computer room with 16 computers and printers, cafeteria, communication options, an auditorium, lounge, classrooms, and administrative offices. Unlike most buildings in Nanjing, the entire Center is heated in winter and air-conditioned in summer. Its laundry room is equipped with American washers and dryers.

The new building opened for classes in the fall of 2006. Now, the Center has doubled in space and has state of the art conference rooms, classrooms, and study areas.

Dormitory Rooms

Most international students are paired with a Chinese student in the Center's dormitory wing. Many of the students find this is one of the most valuable aspects of the Center experience, but making that relationship work is also one of the greatest challenges students face at the Center. Certificate student's dormitory rooms typically house one student pair and are furnished with beds, carpeting, telephones, desks, closet space, and a full bathroom with western fixtures.

Rooms are comfortable with carpeting, a telephone, a desk for each student, ample closet space, and an attached bath (toilet, sink, and shower) with western fixtures. Hot water is available in student rooms throughout the day. The dormitory was recently connected into the Center's LAN providing 24-hour access to the library's electronic library resources and to the Internet for those with their own laptop computers.

Library

The Center's library stacks contain more than 85,000 English and Chinese volumes and 400 periodicals and newspapers, including the International Herald Tribune, The Asian Wall Street Journal, and The South China Morning Post. Computers in the library are connected through the Center's local area network (LAN) to the Nanjing University fiber optic backbone, and from there are connected directly to the China Education and Research Network (CERNET), which serves most colleges, universities, and research institutes in China. Access to the World Wide Web is available through CERNET on all Center computers. Available electronic databases include Lexis-Nexis and First Search. Students can access a portion of their required course readings on the Center's Electronic Reserve (E-Res) system. The library is open throughout the academic year, and stays open until midnight on weeknights.

The student computer room is open 24 hours a day while classes are in session. It is equipped with 15 IBM-compatible Legend Pentium IV (1Ghz) computers with 17-inch monitors and one networked HP4000 LaserJet printer. The computers use the Chinese Windows XP operating system and a Microsoft bundle for word processing and spreadsheets.

Communication Options

Each dorm room is equipped with a telephone with its own 7-digit phone number. Mail is distributed daily to individual mailboxes. Email access is available from the student computer room and through the Center's LAN in each dormitory room for those with their own laptops. The internet is available in the student computer room. Students may send and receive faxes on the student fax machine in the administrative office.
