Class of 1987

Bill Lyons is Director of the Center for Conflict Management and is also an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Akron. This year he has two publications coming out: Crime and Justice (Dartmouth-Ashegate, 2006) and Punishing Schools: Fear and Citizenship in American Education (University of Michigan Press, 2006). He has two sons in college and is happily married to their mother. The family lives in Akron with their dog Annie.

Huaizheng (Henry) Cai works as a Senior Consultant with Computer Science Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia.

Patrick Cranley and his wife and kids have resided for the past decade in Shanghai, where he is managing director of AsiaMedia Ltd., a marketing and communications consulting firm. Patrick served for five years on the board of the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and co-founded the Shanghai Historic House Association in 1998. He is searching for a copy of "The Adverntures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eigth Dimension" to screen at our forthcoming 20th reunion...

Ping Chu works as an IT Senior Manager in Capital One Financial (Virginia, USA).

Class of 1988

Beth Notar has a new book coming out with the University of Hawaii Press, Displacing Desire: Travel and Popular Culture in China. She plans to be in China next year with her husband Joshua and twin boys doing research on China's emerging car culture. She looks forward to seeing and hearing from lao tongxue, hopefully at the reunion!

Class of 1989

James Glucksman has finally moved back to China on a permanent basis with his dogs and everything. He is working on a consulting assignment at Beijing United Family Hospital.

Peter Bagley celebrated the birth of his daughter, Fiona, 8 months ago and is enjoying his time with her.

Class of 1990

Gus Conroy is still working with ExxonMobil in the "glamorous" lubricant marketing industry. His two sons, Kiffa (Chang Neng) and Kaizen (Chang Zhi) are 11 and 8 and excelling in both sports (like their Dad) and academics (like their Mom). They have finally adjusted to life in the surburbs of Fairfax, Virginia, although they discuss options in the furture which would enable them to get back to Asia.

Dennis V. Hickey is pleased to report that my new book, Foreign Policy Making in Taiwan: From Principle to Pragmatism has just been published by Routledge Publishers (London: 2007).

Class of 1991

Amy Parke Cantilina, along with her husband Tom and her two children, Jared (9) and Anna (6), currently resides near Eglin Air Force Base, Florida. They recently completed 3 1/2 years at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, where Tom worked as chief medical staff in the base hospital. While Amy enjoyed the chance to travel throughout Turkey and learn Turkish, Chinese is still her favorite language! Amy is enjoying her days taking care of the kids and volunteering her time in the community, and hopes to eventually return to professional employment in the China field. She welcomes visitors any time!

Guanglei Hong is an Assistant Professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto. He recently recieved a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship. He will spend this upcoming academic year as a visiting scholar at the University of Chicago's Sociology Department.

Noah Kupferman recently joined Merrill Lynch and moved to Montclair, NJ. He has three children: Ben (8), Leo (5), and Anna (2) and the family is settling into their new home.

Yin Ming is a manager of Dalian Import and Export Co. of Yingkou Jinji garments MFG Groups.

Heather (Vierbicher) Mehta married Rahul Mehta in India in July 2003 and they settled in the San Francisco area. Their daughter, Anika, is a happy and active 20-month old.

Zhaomin (James) Zhong is Chairman of Eastern-bay Investment Management Co. Ltd., Shenzhen, China, a company that focuses on long term equity investment. They view Warren E. Buffett as their benchmark. Last year they received more than 35% annual return on the capital they had managed during the last three years. Class of 1993

Yanzhong Huang was recently appointed a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Among the 75 newly elected term members in the nation, he was the only scholar appointed from the New York area.

Class of 1994

Tim Evans was featured in the following Baltimore Sun article, which explains Tim's love of Cal Ripken Jr.

Paula M. Miller has worked at the US-China Business Council (USCBC) in Washington, DC, for the last five years. She is senior manager in USCBC's Publications Department and associate editor for the China Business Review, the magazine of the USCBC. She has lived and worked in Washington since 1998, when she completed her MA in China Studies at the University of Michigan. In her spare time, Paula also illustrates and is creating a new comic.

Shen Hong is currently working as Shanghai Bureau Chief of Dow Jones Newswires. He lives in Shanghai with his wife and two-year-old daughter. He moved back to Shanghai from Singapore in February 2006 after spending ten years on the tropical island.

Class of 1995

Abbey Newman is Executive Director of the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University. In November 2005, she wed Corey Jakubowicz, who proposed to her on the Great Wall during a trip to China.

Beiming Liu currently lives in Philadelphia and works at the accounting firm Ernst & Young. He has a 2 year old son and is expecting his second son any minute!

Dennis Nguyen is the Chairman of New Asia Partners, a Shanghai and Hong Kong-based investment firm focused on assisting Chinese companies access the international capital markets. Mr. Nguyen is also the vice chairman of China Huiyin Group Limited, a Jiangsu-based household appliance and consumer electronics retail chain store operator, and director of Wuyi International Pharmaceutical Holdings Ltd, a Fujian-based manufacturer of speciality pharmaceutical products. He was formerly a director of Sino Environmental Technology Group Ltd, a China-based environmental waste management company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange (stock code: Y62.SI), and M Dream China Holdings Ltd, which is the second largest mobile games software developer in China. He is a member of the Johns Hopkins University/Nanjing University Advisory Council. He currently lives in Shanghai with his wife and two children.

Class of 1997

Brock Wilson recently joined the Foreign Service as an Economics Officer. He and his family have been assigned to Taipei and in the summer of 2007 they will move to Hong Kong. Max (5) and Sydney (2 1/2) are in a Chinese school and doing great.

Erin Owen is thrilled to announce the birth of her son, Ian Christopher Owen-Riggan. He is adorable and (thankfully) already showing the signs of being a good sleep and eater!

Matt Hill and Tiange Gao are living in Shanghai with their son, Oliver (2 1/2). Second child due in June 07. Matt is working for GE Healthcare as Regional Manager - Service, Greater China. Tiange is working for ZOU Marketing, an American sports marketing firm, as Operations Director.

Yanping (Helen) Ming has recently joined Merrill Lynch as a Financial Advisor. She helps high net-worth individuals and small business owners achieve their financial objectives.

Marcie (Wakefield) Ashford has recently relocated to the Hartford, CT area.

Laura Lipscomb has just accepted an Economist position in the Policy Development Review Department of the International Monetary Fund in Washington, DC. She will be moving to DC in mid-September 2006.

Class of 2000

Jon Garrison will marry Darcy Eckman on October 14, 2006 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Between Jon and Darcy, they have four children: Darcy's are Sydney (8), Stockton (4), and Nicholas (1) and Jon's is Lucy (3).

Wang Tao and his wife (Qiao Lei) had their first baby, Allen Wang. He is entering his fourth year of graduate study in Sino-American relations at Georgetown University.

Class of 2001

Floor Perquin still lives in the Netherlands and is working for a Chinese Language Institute. She is involved with the teaching materials and hopes to develop more translation activities over the next year. Next year she plans to visit China.

The years-long rommance of Kelly Kong and her boyfriend Adam Rogers culminated in a happy marriage in May 2006. HNC classmates Kristen Loring, Feng Wang, and Xian Zheng (1999-2000) joined in the wedding festivities held at the Farmington Club, Connecticut.

John Robinson recently joined Deloitte Consulting LLP in Chicago, where he is working in the global expansion optimization practice. The position takes him back to China on a regular basis.

Wang Lei married Shen Yin this summer, who has just graduated from the Ph.D. program in Neuroscience at Fudan University in Spetember and will come to the U.S. in a couple of months for her postdoctoral research at Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York. Wang Lei has been doing my dissertation research in Urban Planning at Columbia University and they will probably move to the Bronx to facilitate Shen Yin's transition to the United States.

Class of 2002

Kris Kvols was married to Jasmine Hong Liu of Nanjing in May of this year. In June, they moved to the Washington DC area, where Kris was recently sworn-in as a Foreign Service Officer. They will leave for their first post, Seoul, in May 2007. In the meantime, Kris will spend a short time in the Office for Korean Affairs at the State Department, followed by several months of Korean language training.

Chen Hao is currently pursuing his LL.M. degree at Harvard Law School.

Liza Davis married Daniel Tobin on September 30, 2006. They met in the China Studies Department at SAIS and currently live and work in Washington DC.

Class of 2005

Lu Zhijuan is currently working with Dow Jones & Company as a financial news translator.

Rena Sasaki, after traveling around Europe, East Asia, and the US, has relocated to London where she will be pursuing a training contract with Clifford Chance. They will be sponsoring her through two years of law school and two years of legal training before she qualifies as a lawyer in 2010. She will therefore be in London for a while, so if anyone is interested in visiting Rena- please let know!

Travis Sevy has welcomed a new edition to his family this spring. Asher is now 5 months and almost the same size as his big sister Mayah. Travis is starting his second year at the Yale-China Association directing the Yale-China Teaching Fellowship and loves all the chances he has to work with Chinese scholars and NGO leaders. Lindsay is busy working on Mayah's Chinese, art, and potty skills, and is also teaching piano lessons and leading a women's service organization in New Haven.

Meghan Houlihan has moved to Washington DC and is working for the Hopkins-Nanjing Center as Alumni and Program Coordinator. She is very excited about her position and looks forward to meeting all HNC Alumni.

Tabitha Mallory is enrolled at SAIS in the China Studies Department. She is enjoying her studies, especially Economics, and is spending her free time as an HNC intern.
